First of all, what are superfoods?
Superfoods are defined as “nutrient rich foods that are considered to be especially beneficial for health and wellbeing”. Consuming foods that are packed with nutrients and vitamins is always a good idea, however there is no set criteria determining, which food is considered a superfood and which isn’t. Today, lots of foods are being labelled as superfoods and sold at a premium price, while at the same time there are lots of foods that are just as beneficial to your health but won’t break your wallet. Here are 6 of my favourite “superfoods” and why they are part of my daily nutrition.
This “super berry” is one of my favourite fruits and at the same time rich in vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. All these characteristics may reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Studies suggest that blueberries may even improve memory. I love to enjoy them as a snack or make a yummy smoothie out of it. They are also a great snack stirred into some coconut yogurt.
This ancient superfood has been around for about 6000 years and are the richest source of omega-3-fatty acids. These small brown or golden seeds are high in fiber, low in carbs are fully glutenfree as well as are high in antioxidants to only name a few benefits. One tbsp. of flaxseed soaked in three tbsp. of water for 15 min can substitute the egg when you are baking cookies or bread. I also love to stir in 1 tbsp into my oatmeal in the morning. They are not only an accessible superfood but also super delicious with their nutty flavour.
This vegetable is the king of nutrition as it contains more antioxidants than most other fruits and vegetables and it’s super affordable. Kale is not a new food but has only received the deserved attention over the last years. It’s also a great source of fiber and iron and can be enjoyed raw, baked or steamed. I love to make a simple kale salad with some apple, salt and olive oil. It’s so simple and so delicious.
This vegetable is a little spicy and one of my favourite add ons to curries and sauces. It’s an amazing flavouring for cooking and a natural remedy for inflammation and an upset stomach. Try hot water with ginger, lemon and honey when you feel a little sick or have an upset stomach.
- Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are loaded with the most essential fatty acids of any known plant. One serving (about 1 tsp) is full or iron calcium and potassium. These little guys are available everywhere and the perfect addition to smoothies, granola bars, cookies and mueslis. They can also be sued as an egg replacer for baking.
- Hemp seeds
Sometimes, “big things come in a small package”! These seeds, which can be bought shelled, raw toasted, as oil or protein powder are full of fatty acids, which contribute to the health of our heart, brain, joints and skin. It also has a high content of protein, fiber, minerals, magnesium and so much more. I love mixing some shelled hemp seeds over my muesli or into my smoothie and I always sprinkle some shelled hemp seeds over my salad. On hectic days or before a workout, I enjoy a hemp protein shake with hemp protein powder, coconut milk and chia seeds, which is so good and gives you a lot of energy!
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Everybody know this saying and its true! Apples have so many incredible health benefits. Apples are supporting a healthy heart, smooth skin and strong bones.They are also beneficial to maintain a healthy brain as well s help loose weight and keep a healthy intestine. Ich try to eat an apple everyday. I love cutting one into my oatmeal in the morning or add some apples in to my green juice in the morning. It’s also a great afternoon snack served with some almond butter.
